Here are some thoughts from a Bishopric in our stake on lessons they have learned on how to effectively hold youth activities.
1) Help youth improve communication with respect to the meeting details, etc. All the Zoom links can be overwhelming. Help make it easy for them to manage all the links.
2) Focus on mentoring of the quorum/class presidency as they carry out the work of salvation in their respective quorum or class. This means the adults aren’t focused on taking on the work of the Quorum in the class (i.e. Planning activities, etc.). The adults are focused on helping the class/quorum presidency lead the work of salvation in their respective quorum/class. Regular Pre-presidency and Presidency meetings are the best way to accomplish mentoring.
3) Encourage in-person meetings when possible.
4) Encourage the youth to interact with each other in a natural non-meeting setting (phone, email, text or in-person if everyone feels comfortable). The quorum or class president should understand that the work of salvation doesn’t stop, due to the suspension of gatherings. The work of salvation continues and will require some revelation in figuring out how the quorum/class presidency can minister to the youth in their respective quorum/class.
5) Engage the families. An adult quorum advisor is to assist the family in helping the youth come closer to Christ. Reach out to the parents ask them what works for them when it comes to virtual or in person classes. Ask the parents how the quorum or class might be able to help the YM or YW come closer to Christ.
Every ward is different and some of these tips might not be relevant for every ward. Each situation is different. The purpose of sharing this list is to share ideas about what is worked in one ward in our stake.
We are confident that as you pray and counsel with the ward youth council, you will receive revelation on how to effectively mentor and minister to the youth in your ward.
